What We Do?

We are yarning with Aboriginal people who have had a stroke and with health services who provide services to people who have had a stroke to find out what works and what needs to be done better.

We are listening and working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples who have had a stroke, their families, carers and health service providers to develop a stroke care approach that is culturally appropriate and meaningful in assisting with recovery following a stroke.

It adds to the growing evidence that yarning is a culturally responsive approach to achieve improved health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal people and communities in the context of living well and preventing chronic disease.

The communities on Gamilaraay/Gomeroi lands are leading and guiding the Yarning up After Stroke Team.

Community Engagement

Aunty Audrey Trindall, Joe Miller, Lisa Shipley and the YuAS team has been engaging with community in a number of ways at various Community Events including NAIDOC celebrations at Quirindi, Gunnedah, Inverell and Tamworth. The team has been yarning about the project and stroke awareness during Stroke Week and at local community events, community healing days, International Women’s Day and at school-based events.

We have held Family Fun Days at the Coledale Community Centre. The focus of these days has been to build relationships and trust and share knowledge between community members and the Project Team. Elders shared their own stroke journeys and the community enjoyed entertainment: music, footy fun, arts and bingo. The day was a great opportunity for the community to share a meal and connect with each other.
